Vitamin D Can Cure Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a condition in which joints, cartilage and bone degrades. Some of the common symptoms for the disease include joint pain, tenderness and stiffness. The number of OA cases is increasing day after day. Many suggest Vitamin D as an option to get relieved from OA. Also there is another faction, which denies this fact. A recent research conducted by researchers in Tufts Medical Center in USA, proves Vitamin D supplementation will not help curing Osteoarthritis. Dr Vijay Reddy, a well known Orthopaedic Surgeon in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai explains about OA and Vitamin D supplementation for the same.

Osteoporosis affects women mostly. Women in the age of 41-60 and above 60 are at the risk of getting osteoporosis. Many women today have osteoporosis complaints. But at the same time, they are not aware of the risks involved in it. Lack of calcium and especially vitamin D is considered as the main reason for this condition. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is naturally present in very few foods. Vitamin D is mainly derived from the action of sunlight on 7-dehydrocholesterol in the skin, and vitamin D deficiency is more likely to occur in individuals with darker skins or in those whose skin extensively covered. The principal actions of Vitamin D are to stimulate absorption of calcium by the gut and promote mineralisation of bone. (more…)
