Junk food is a term normally avoided by the health conscious. There is a reason why “junk” food is referred to by its name; it doesn’t provide any health benefits and usually does the body more harm than good. Although most so called junk food should be avoided, there are certain food items which could potentially be of some use to the body. These varieties of food which we are told to forbid from our diet for a healthier lifestyle could also cure many health conditions and ailments affecting our body.

1. Red Meat

Red meat is considered “untouchable” for many due to its high cholesterol content and for some, religious purposes. According to many published articles and studies, it is supposed to cause anything from heart disease to lyme disease. Although some of these concerns could be proved  true regarding the risk of eating red meat, there are also some significant health benefits associated with it. Red meat is a significant source of Vitamin D, Heme Iron and Zinc. The Vitamin D and Zinc content in red meat is more easily absorbed as compared to other forms of the same. Zinc is considered to be essential part of your daily nutritional intake because it aids in the improvement of many physiological functions.

2. Sour Cream

Sour cream is usually recommended to avoid due to its high caloric content coming directly from fat. Although it has high fat content, sour cream is made from certain types of lactic-acid bacteria through fermentation. Sour cream is also a good source of calcium, protein, vitamin B12 and phosphorus.

3. Cheese

Cheese is bad. Cheese makes you fat. Yes, the notion of cheese and its high caloric and fat content helping you gain those extra kilos could be true, cheese also provides the required calcium and saturated fat that your body requires to maintain your health. High-quality and full fat cheese is surprisingly more nutritious for your body than low-fat cheese in that it has considerably lesser calories and lactose. Cheese, among other dairy products, is also recommended as part of a healthy diet to reduce weight and abdominal fat.

4. Egg Yolks

Egg yolks contain the most amount of cholesterol compared to any other food. A recent study from University of Western Ontario notes that eggs could be as bad as smoking. Although cholesterol is thought to be one of the causes for heart attacks and heart related diseases, the kind found in eggs are much lower. Cholesterol is also essential as part of a nutritious diet and your body can synthesize it on its own.

5. Dark Chocolates

Chocolates are always part of the “no-no” list for people following a strict diet. Chocolates contain high fat content and can lead to significant weight gain. But dark chocolates contains saturated and monounstaurated fats which provides many healthy benefits. Dark Chocolates also help in reducing high blood pressure and the risk of diabetes.
